The allegations made by Azeem Rafiq of Racism at Yorkshire county have created a storm with a couple of cricketers coming in forward supporting the claims made by Rafiq. Earlier this month, Roger Hutton resigned as the chairman of Yorkshire and cited the reasons of lack of support from ECB and ‘lack of care and contrition’ from the senior management of the club.

The ex-chairman has now admitted that the county is institutionally racist. The ex-chairman was consistently asked about the racism at the county by the Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) Select Committee. The ex-chairman believed that there was “a great deal of thoughtlessness, ignorance, reluctance to apologize, to see Azeem as a victim and a reluctance to put into place the recommendations.”

Roger Hutton’s tenure from April 2020 oversaw the investigation being conducted into racism claims by Rafiq. He revealed that he was thwarted by legal advice and also by the team management who seemed unwilling.

It is worth noting that no current representatives from the Yorkshire county came were present at the parliamentary meeting and he believed that Arthur and Moxon did not took the matter seriously and were unwilling to apologize. According to Hutton, “The CEO made it clear that he did not want to apologise to Azeem Rafiq,”

The ECB CEO Tom harrison believed that the county club has let the ECB down. ECB initially allowed Yorkshire to conduct their investigation into the matter but felt let down the way matter was handled and the amount of time it took to reveal the findings.

“The reason why Yorkshire were allowed to undergo this investigation is that up to that point it was normal,” Harrison said. “We have learnt lessons through this process, not only that it has been handled incredibly badly, but has taken so long. There are a litany of issues to deal with which will help us going forward.”
