England lost the semis to the finals. With NZ needing 57 overs of the last four overs, England felt that they had their noses ahead of the kiwis. However, the late onslaught from Neesham and calculated shorts from Darryl Mitchell ensured that the kiwis won with an over to spare. Speaking to Skysports, Michale Atherton commented that England could have bowled better in the death overs. England was well within the game until the arrival of James Neesham who targeted Chris Jordan from his second ball of the innings.

The T20 in Australia will offer different challenges: Michael Atherton

Atherton believes that England has done remarkably well across all the formats in the last 2 years and that there shouldn’t be a mass exodus of players owing to their loss against the NewZealanders in the semis. He showed support to Morgan by saying that the captain has somewhat earned the right to state his desire to remain as the captain as the side has performed well in Worldcup and over the last years. Atherton said that England, along with Pakistan looked as the contenders of the WC as the tournament progressed.

In T20, any team can beat anyone: Michael Atherton

Atherton voiced his sentiment that while the 50-over matches generally favor the best team, in the T20 matches the margin of error is very less and that any team can make a comeback at the later stages. He cited the example of James Neesham whose 27 of 11 balls changed the momentum of the game and took the victory from the jaws of England. Atherton believes that the blackcaps are an outstanding team across all formats of the game.
