Rumors are swirling around that Mumbai Indians are not keen to retain Hardik Pandya. If they do release him, then he will fetch a high bid in the auctions. It has now come to attention that Sunrisers Hyderabad will not retain Rashid Khan and David Warner. While Warner hinted that he is unlikely to be retained by the franchise, the decision to let go of Rashid Khan has come off as a surprise. In my opinion, the players may not have been happy with the amount that the franchise offered to them and therefore they are back in the mega auction. The duo tweeted officially and have thanked the franchise for their support.
The IPL is venturing into a new era with its Retention 2021 before the mega auction will be held in 2022. Many sites have already begun claiming the name of the players who are going to be retained. The last deadline for finalizing the player retention list is 12 p.m IST 30th November 2021. The current IPL teams are allowed to retain a total of 4 players (2 players abroad). The newly formed IPL teams based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad will be allowed to procure three players after the current teams have made their retention decision. In this post, we will be posting live updates from the retention.
Chennai Superkings likely to retain MS Dhoni, Rituraj Gaikwad, Mooen Ali, and Ravindra Jadeja
For the die-hard Chennai fans, it is no surprise that MSD will continue with the Chennai Super Kings. The calm-headed captain is the second leading winner of the IPL in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. While his late-hitting prowess may have dwindled in recent years, his captaincy and decision-making skills have done all the talking since the inception of the IPL. N. Srinivasan, the India Cements Ltd (ICL) vice-chairman and managing director had already hinted back in October that ‘There is no CSK without MS Dhoni’ while Dhoni expressed interest in playing the last game of his IPL career in front of Chennai fans.
Riuraj Gaiekwad was the highest run-getter of the IPL 2021 with 635 runs and is only 24 years of age, which is why the CSK franchise is looking to retain him. Ravindra Jadeja has been a consistent performer for the CSK and his last three seasons have been fruitful for the franchise with total runs amassed as 227, 232, and 106 in the last three IPL seasons. Known to be in the good books of MSD, Jadeja’s left-arm spin is tricky for the batsman after the power plays and his rocket arm has always been a plus point.
Moeen Ali: – It is a surprise that he debuted in IPL in 2018. His all-around performance has helped CSK, especially in their chase. The left-hander has made the middle order stable and was crucial in the stellar performance of the team in 2021. His 2021 IPL final innings of 37 runs of 20 balls helped the CSK to pose a formidable total. Faf Du Plessis is also a strong contender for the fourth retention, however, the franchise may not retain him seeing his current form.
Kolkatta Knight Riders likely to retain Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer
Sunil Narine has been a consistent performer for the KKR franchises for the last nine years. Not only he can bowl deceivingly but has also proved his talent as an opener. His bowling performances in 2012 and 2014 under Gambhir’s leadership helped KKR to turn around their fortunes and clinch the title.
Venkatesh Iyer has been in red hot form in the IPL. The Kolkatta team was nowhere in contention after the first leg of the IPL 2021. The resurgence of the team in the latter half of the tournament was mainly because of Iyer’s batting performances. The IPL performance gave him a call to the Indian T20 team against the recently conducted series against New Zealand, which India won comprehensively by 3- 0. According to Irfan Pathan. KKR cannot afford to not retain Iyer. The former pacer also believed that if not retained, it would be nearly for the franchise to buy him in the mega auction.
Andre Russell did not have a great outing with the franchise but if the reports are to be believed, he is retained by the KKR management. He has been a key player, especially for his ability to hit the ball out of the park at will and on his day can win the game single-handedly. His best performance in IPL came in 2019 when he amassed 510 runs at a strike rate of 204.81. With both Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik unlikely to be retained, the KKR team is in need of a reputed deputy who can provide insights to the captain at crucial stages of the game.
Varun Chakravarthy had a great outing with the ball in the last two seasons of IPL. The deceiving spinner bagged 18 and 17 wickets in 2021 and 2020 and made the life for the batsman to score freely after the powerplay which is why the KKR management is keen to retain him.
Royal Challengers Bangalore likely to retain Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell
Kohli has been associated with RCB ever since its inception and has been amongst the top performer for them. He played under the leadership of Dravid, Kumble, and Daniel Vettori before being appointed as the captain in 2013. Before the beginning of the IPL 2021 2nd phase, Kohli announced that he would step down as the captain from both Indian T20 and RCB teams and will continue to play as a batsman. Virat scored more than 900 runs in the 2016th edition of IPL and almost came close to winning the title for RCB.
Maxwell has played with four IPL teams till now. His notable performances came during his 2014 IPL stint with Kings XI Punjab when he scored 552 at an average of 34.50. The batsman displayed great batting performance in this year’s IPL which might compel the franchise to retain him.
Delhi Capitals to retain Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje
If there is one thing common between Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, it is the fact that the keeper-batsman has been associated with a single IPL team from their starting. Pant joined the Delhi Capitals in 2016 and is the current captain of the Delhi Capitals after Shreyas Iyer got injured in IPL 2021 for the rest of the tournament. He has also decided to go into the auctions and therefore will not be retained by the Delhi Capitals. Pant has amassed 419, 343, and 488 runs in the last three IPL seasons and his keeping has only improved over the years.
After an average performance in 2020, shaw came with a bang by scoring 479 runs at a strike rate of 159.13 in IPL 2021. The batsman is only 22 years of age and has shown great potential already.
Anrich Nortje and Rabada were the main contenders for the fourth retention, how excellent bowling in the death overs helped the case of Anrich Nortje. His death overs economy rate stands at 7.82.
Rajasthan Royals to retain Samson
Samson has been with Rajasthan Royals since 2013 but played for Delhi Capitals later on. He made a comeback to the Rajasthan Royals team in 2018 and has displayed decent batting performance with a total of 484, 375, and 342 in the last three IPL seasons. There were reports that Samson was considering the RR franchise and even unfollowed them on social media. It has now been confirmed that Samson will continue as the captain. He brings the advantage of being a wicket-keeper batsman and has good captaincy skills. He is likely to be paid a hefty amount of Rs 14 crores.
