Upon being asked should India go for Rohit Sharma as the next T20 captain or the management should think of the long term, Sunil Gavaskar chose Rohit Sharma as the best man to win an ICC trophy for the country. Citing his 5-time winning record for the Mumbai Indians, the fearless former cricket said that Sharma is the “obvious choice”.
The team has faltered in the ICC events: Gavaskar
Against Namibia, Virat Kohli played his last game as the captain of the Indian T20 team. The campaign was derailed by heavy defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand. India was touted as the favorite before the World Cup.
While Gavaskar heaped praises for Virat’s captaincy in the T20I, he did mention that India has not done well in the ICC events. The men in blue have done well under Virat’s leadership especially in England and Australia. India reached the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017, reached the semis of 2019 WC, and also reached the finals of the World Test championship, which they lost to New Zealand, a side that has been a nightmare for the men in blue in the ICC events.
Kohli had already announced his stepping down from the captaincy before the world cup. From then onwards, there were speculations that Rohit Sharma will take over the T20 captaincy. Kolhi gave the reason for workload management and stated that he will continue to captain the side in the longer and longest format. There are even rumors that even the ODI captaincy is likely to be handed to the five-time IPL winning captain.
Fresh Legs and Fresh thinking are required : Gavaskar
Gavaskar has said that while the team needs some fresh legs and thinking, they should avoid big changes and also avoid changing the batting order. When asked if there was any player, who should have been the part of the team in this WC, Gavaskar replied that it was the batting that has led the team down.
Players who have not done well should be given a break: Gavaskar
While the former prolific scorer did not mention that name, he did say that few players who have not done in the WC need to be given a break. At the same time, players who have done well in the IPL need to be given chances in the T20s for India keeping in mind the conditions that will be provided in the next year T20 in Australia.
