The All India Senior-Selection Committee announced the ODI squad for South Africa on Friday. K L Rahul has been appointed as the captain for the ODI tour as the new captain Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be fully recovered from his hamstring in the left leg.
When asked about K L Rahul being named as the captain, Chetan Sharma said that they are grooming K L Rahul as captain. The player has received captaincy responsibilities for short durations over the years and according to Chetan Sharma, has proved leadership qualities, and that he is a regular member of Team India in all three format players.
A question can be asked whether Virat Kohli could have been appointed as the captain for the SA ODI tour in absence of Rohit Sharma? Kohli is fresh from the captaincy responsibilities and handing him the captaincy in absence of Rohit Sharma could have been a shoulder of trust implying that the former captain is still a leader when the side needs it.
Kohli and BCCI have given out contradictory statements about the captaincy removal. And now Chetan Sharma has come forth that backs Ganguly’s version which states Kohli was indeed requested to not relinquish the T20 captaincy, that too at a time when the T20 World Cup was about to start.
Coming back to K L Rahul’s appointment, the Karnataka player was the captain of the Punjab Kings franchise. They wanted to retain him for the next three years but the player decided to go into the mega-auction in order to fetch higher bids and there are rumors that the Lucknow franchise may bring him onboard for whooping money.
The ODI tour of South Africa will start on the 19th, 21st, and 23rd of January. The first two matches will be played at Paarl and the last one at Newlands, Capetown. Mohammad Shami has been rested whereas the likes of Ravindra Jadeja are undergoing treatment. R.Ashwin will also be seen. The off-spinner had a remarkable comeback in shorter format in the T20 World cup after nearly four years.
