After all the conflict and criticism that he has gone through in 2021, Virat Kohli couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the 2021 calendar than the win in the first test match. In all the 30 years of the South Africa tour, India has finally registered their maiden win at Supersport Park, Centurion. Speaking to the broadcaster Star Sports, Morne Morkel heaped praises on the Indian bowlers for their right line and length.
“India has bullied South Africa in their backyard,” said Morkel. India were fortunate enough to win the toss and bat first as the wicket was slow due to the overnight rain. Openers K L Rahul and Mayank Agarwal put a solid opening partnership. Team India although got bowled out cheaply on the second day but were able to keep the South African first innings under 200 which gave them a huge lead.
India in the second innings did not score too many runs but were able to afford a monumental target of 305 runs for South Africa. The home team put up a fight but eventually crumbled on the morning of fifth day and lost three wickets in the session. Mohammad Shami took 8 wickets for 107 runs in the entire match with a fifer in the first innings. K L Rahul was adjudged as the man of the match for his century in the first innings.
India has also become the first Asian team to beat the South Africa test team at Centurion. The next test match will start at Johannesburg and the win there will give India their maiden test series win, the final frontier for the sub-continent side. Eyes will be on Jasprit Bumrah whether he will be fully fit. The pacer twisted his ankle in the second innings and left the field but eventually came back after the treatment and looked alright.
