India suffered a blow just a couple of days before South Africa’s departure when Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the Test series due to the hamstring in his left leg. Earlier there was speculation of all not being well Rohit and Virat which is why there was news of Virat wanting to skip the ODI tour. But all of that rumors were put to rest by Virat Kohli when he announced that he was and is available for the complete SA tour.
For any touring team, acclimatizing to the overseas condition is always challenging. How good a team is in their backyard, they still face plenty of woes when traveling overseas. Now with the Covid protocols in place, it has become challenging to even practice as the bubble life takes a toll on players’ mental well-being.
Of late Rohit Sharma has been a revolution in the test arena for India, not only in the home series but also overseas. Talking to Boria Majumdar, Sharma said talked about preparing for matches in South Africa during the Covid times.
He said “Yeah. You got to be ready but that’s where I am gonna try and plan. We are not going to get pitches like South Africa here in India but we are gonna try and do something similar to what we are gonna expect in South Africa.”
The men in blue ODI’s campaign against South Africa will begin on the 19th of January. If Rohit gets fit, this would be the debut series as captain for the dashing right-hander in a permanent role. He was appointed as the ODI captain as the selectors were not in favor of split-captaincy in the white-ball format. He is also the T20 captain of the side and together with Dravid and other coaches, India will be desperate to win an ICC tournament next year and in 2023.
