The IPL Franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore has appointed Sanjay Bangar as their head coach for the IPL 2022. The appointment is valid for two years while the post of director of cricket operations will be continued with Mike Hessons. Bangar was working as a batting consultant for the franchise in IPL 2021.
Bangar was also the batting coach of the Indian cricket team from 2014 to 2019. Vikram Rathore stepped in his shoes in the year 2019. Hesson mentioned that the former Indian coach was appointed the franchise coaching role after an extensive selection process.
Before Bangar, Simon Katich was the head coach. He opted out of the duty in IPL 2021, citing personal reasons Mike Hesson was then appointed as the Interim head coach of RCB.
Mike Hesson said that Bangar was a “standout candidate” and holds far more expertise than just a batting coach. A mega auction is due before the start of the next year’s IPL and that the onboarding of Bangar will help in choosing the right players for the next upcoming years of the franchise.
On 9th November 2021, Virat Kohli played his last T20 match as the captain of the Indian team from the shortest format. Kohli has previously announced his stepping down from the RCB captainship as well. It will be interesting to see how the team gels under new leadership as the franchise have will look to appoint a new captain and have already appointed a new coach.
