Ravi Shastri after being with the Indian team for 8 years including 5 years as the head coach made the announcement before the T20 World cup that he will be stepping down from the coaching position after the event. There were speculations about the new coach for Team India and later on it was confirmed that Dravid will indeed take on the head coach position. The series against New Zealand was the first assignment of Dravid which India won. Now he is looking to guide India for a win in South Africa, especially the test series as India have never won it before on the South African shores. In a video released by the BCCI, Dravid talks about being welcomed into the team and not making too many changes straightaway as a coach. He said that had some fond memories of South Africa and that it is a very challenging place to play cricket. It was under Dravid that won their first test win in South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006.
For many years, India although has performed well across all the formats but has not been able to win an ICC tournament. India roped in Dravid specifically for this purpose and winning the test series in South Africa would be a key assignment for the new coach.
Dravid pointed out that there is an expectation from India to win every time, especially in the test match in away conditions. India has shown some staggering performances over the last few years. They have defeated Australia in Australia twice and were almost on the brink of winning the test series in England until the final match was called due to Covid. India are currently leading that series and the final match will be played in the summer of 2022.
