“If I upset R. Ashwin, I am happy” – Ravi Shastri

Ashwin recently revealed during an interview that he felt crushed by Shastri’s statements when he said the Kuldeep Yadav is the best spinner India has in the overseas test team after the Sydney test win in 2019. Speaking to IndianExpress, Shastri clearly said that he is not there butter everyone’s toes.

In his own words, “One thing as a coach let me tell you. My Job out there is not butter everyone’s toes. My Job is, without agenda to state facts and say it the way it is. Aswin didn’t play the test match in Sydney and Kohli played and took five fer, and bowled brilliantly. It was only fair that I give that young kid who is playing probably his first or second test match overseas, and he bowled magnificiently in that test match. So I said, the way he is bowled here, there is every chance he could be India’s no1. bowler overseas. Now If that hurt some other player, then I would say good.

In hindsight, I am glad that I made that statement and Ashwin has made this statement because if it hurt him and he as upset, I am glad the way he went about his job. Because I am the kind of coach that want player to go inside and say ‘I am going to show this coach. I am going to teach him a lesson and show what I am all about.’. So if it upset him, I am very happy.”

Difference between Shastri’s and question asked from Ashwin

During the interview with Cricinfo, Ashwin was asked how he felt when Shastri termed Kuldeep as the best overseas spinner in test after 2019 Sydney Test against Australia where he took five wickets. To which Ashwin replied that felt dissappointed as he has given some appreciable performance for India in the overseas before. Ravi Shastri during the interview with Indian express stated that kuldeep could be the best test overseas for India. There is clear contradiction between what Shastri is acknowledging and the question that Ashwin responded to. Shastri credited Ravi Ashwin for the way he has transformed himself in 2021 from 2019. According to Shastri, the comparisonof Ashwin’s bowling in 2019 and 2021 could be chop and cheese and that he would go for the cheese anyday.
