After his recent performance of a 10-wicket haul in an innings against India, becoming only the third player in the history of cricket, Ajaz Patel has been left out of the New Zealand squad for the home series against Bangladesh. Tom Latham will be captaining the side as the skipper is undergoing treatment for his elbow injury. The two test match series will start from the 1st of January.

Devon Conway who missed the India tour due to his thumb injury that he sustained in the World cup is back in the side. The bowling has been bolstered by the return of Trent Boult and Mark Henry. Coach Gary Stead spoke on the omission of Ajaz Patel “You do feel for Ajaz after his record-breaking display in India,” Stead said. “However, we’ve always applied a horses-for-courses selection policy and believe the players selected best fit the way we want to take on Bangladesh here at home”

Why Ajaz Patel has been left out of the NZ Squad?

While the NewZealand cricket board has not announced a particular reason, the omission of an off-spinner is likely due to the fact that NewZealand pitches are rarely assistant to spinners. After Daniel Vettori, spinners have not been able to foster their place in the Newzealand side as the preference is largely given to the fast bowlers. Rachin Ravindra has however found his place for the Bangladesh test series.

Bangladesh had to undergo an extended quarantine as Rangana Herath, their spin bowling coach was Covid positive, and keeping in view of the players who came in contact with him, the New Zealand health ministry directed the Bangladeshi players to extend their quarantine. Even in the absence of their skipper, New Zealand is still a very strong side. This is likely the retirement series for Ross Taylor.

New Zealand Test squad: Tom Latham (captain), Tom Blundell (wk), Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, Will Young
