Joe Root as captain is not showing fighting instincts – Former Pakistani Cricketer

England has always been the dominant side in their home conditions but unlike India who has shown tremendous resilience under pressure in the overseas conditions, Root’s side has been not been able to live up to their expectations. After their easy tours of Sri Lanka, England looked to itch a new memory of great performance on the away tours. They dominated India in the first test match in Chennai. But since then, the side has fumbled not only on the away but also in their home conditions too against the likes of New Zealand and India.

Much was being hyped about the English team before the Ashes. But the pressure of expectations, wrong team selections, and a bit of bad luck in the first test match has totally derailed their confidence. At the end of day 4, England was 82 for four. While the side does have the caliber to produce heroics like what the Indian side did earlier this year when they chased down 326 on the final day, it seems highly unlikely at the point of writing this post.

Much has been said about Joe Root’s captaincy with David Gower and Ian Chappel sharing the same sentiment that Root is probably a wonderful batter but not effective as the captain. Speaking on his Youtube channel, Salman Butt has now put forth his observation that the England captain’s body language doesn’t reflect killer instincts which are necessary especially when it comes to facing the likes of Australia in Australia. In his own words, “The problems are too much evident on his (Root) face. For a captain, they shouldn’t be as evident and his body language is not reflecting fight and instincts to come back and hit hard”

Salman Butt agreed with the sentiments of Ian Chappell, who earlier remarked that Root is a great batter but not a good captain. “Ian chappel is a legend in World Cricket and if he had said something (about Root) then he definitely must have thought about it and weighed before giving such statement because it is not an easy thing to say about a captain who is such an established player also”

Miracles are needed to save England from another Ashes test defeat. Critics have already pointed that the first two tests offer more familiar conditions for the English side and that the conditions will only become more challenging as the series progresses.
