“Ollie Robinson better than Dom Bess & Jack Leach”: English fans on his spin bowling

England would have never thought that one of the best bowlers on the tour would be resorting to spin bowling for a few overs. The tactics seemed bizzare although Shane Warne praised Robinson for having loops and flight on the ball. ‘He got some nice loop, didn’t bowl too fast and a little bit of turn,’ Warne said while commentating on Fox Sports.

The fast bowler came to the bowl the off-spinners around the 20th over. Fans were wondering the reason and some expressed frustration by saying that the Christmas series has been nothing less than a joke.

One of the fan’s sarcasm humor was that Robinson is bowling much better than the specialist off-spinners in the team. England did not include Jack Leach and Dom Bess in this match and went with all seam attacks. Jack Leach wasn’t given a chance after his horrible 102 runs giving in 13.2 overs in the 1st test match whereas Dom Bess’s confidence is still below the datum line after the horrendous tour of India earlier this year.

Why Ollie Robinson resorted to off-spin?

There could have been a couple of reasons but the most prominent of them would be to avoid the slow over-rate. England’s overrate has been a concern in this match too. And the visiting side would be wary of not losing more points like in the first test match where they were docked off 8 points by match referee David Boon.

Seeing Nathan Lyon getting the turn and bounce in the 1st innings, England too tried to do the same with their spin options in the form of Root, who bowled nearly 20 overs. In the absence of their captain and spin option, Robinson tried to think out of the box and bowled a number of spin overs. However, his overs looked far from threatening to the Australians. Seeing that the tactic isn’t yielding any result, Robinson resorted back to his medium-pace bowling.

England is down and out in the second test and is looking to survive the last day with 6 wickets in hand. Heroics can be expected according to Stuart Broad, but the writing on the wall is pretty much clear with England soon to be 0-2 behind in this Ashes.
