Virat Kohli to skip South Africa ODI series due to personal reasons – Reports

In what seems a double blow for the Indian team after the injury of Rohit Sharma, there are now reports emerging that Virat Kohli will be skipping the ODI series of South Africa due to personal reasons. Earlier, Virat was annexed from the ODI captaincy by the BCCI, and Rohit Sharma was appointed as the captain. According to the reports, Virat will take a break for his daughter’s first birthday and therefore has communicated to the BCCI about his unavailability for the ODI series.

It is interesting to note that Virat Kohli’s daughter’s birthday is on the 11th of January whereas the third test will start from the 11th of January till the 15th. Virat is still the Test captain and the ODI series in South Africa will start from January 19th. India is to play three tests and three ODI and the team under Virat Kohli’s leadership will be looking to win their maiden series in South Africa, a feat in itself.

The team underwent a practice session at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy on Sunday. Virat wasn’t seen practicing with the team as he was under the bio-bubble. Yesterday only the news emerged that Rohit Sharma has got injured in his left hamstring and the newly appointed captain is likely to miss the entire leg of the South African series. Hamstring has been a concern for Rohit as he played only the last two matches during the 2020 – 2021 Australian tour due to the injury. During the 2020 tour of New Zealand too, Rohit was left out due to the same injury.

If Virat Kohli would be unavailable for the ODI leg, the BCCI would have a hard time choosing the ODI captain for the series. In all likelihood, K L Rahul or Shreyas Iyer will lead in the absence of Virat and Rohit. The last time India went to South Africa, they lost the test series but won comprehensively in the ODIs and T20s.

There have been reports that Virat Kohli’s phone has been switched off ever since he got removed from the captaincy. Rohit Sharma yesterday while talking to the BCCI acknowledged the legacy of Virat legacy and heaped praises on his captaincy. After the South Africa series, India are to host West Indies after which there will be IPL.

Virat Kolhi to also skip the third test also?

If reports are to be true that the Indian captain has given the reasons of his daughter’s birthday for skipping the ODI series, then he may skip the third test also. The third test starts on the 11th of January, the same day as Vamika’s birthday. Only further reports can clarify whether Virat will participate in the third test or not at Newlands, capetown.
