Ashes 5th test: Hobart announced as the venue

It has been confirmed now that Hobart will host the 5th test match between Australia and England. The venue was taken away from Western Australia after they refused to bend their 14-day quarantine rule for the visitors that also includes the broadcast and logistics personnel. Hobart has a seating capacity of 15000 people.

When it appeared that Cricket Australia is thinking of other avenues, Western Australia officials moved the request to host the Daynight 2nd test match which is to be held in Adelaide. The move was rejected after South Australian Cricket Association intervened.

According to a report in Australian media, Hobart came on top against Sydney Cricket Ground and Melbourne Cricket Ground. The match to be held at Melbourne has not received good ticket sales which is why it wasn’t awarded the 5th match as per reports.

The fifth test match at Hobart will be a Day night Match

Earlier, Nick Hockley, the CEO of Cricket Australia, declared that the fifth test match would be a day-night affair. This would be the first time that two day-night test matches will be held in a series. The Pink ball is known to offer more swing than the red ball and the match would therefore be exciting from the seamer’s point of view. Apart from Hobart, Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney were also in contention. There are reports that the curators in Hobart have also zeroed on the pitch on which the match would be played on.

Western Australia government’s 14 -day mandatory quarantine would be meant that Perth would have been able to host only the 2nd test match as the visitors from Brisbane are exempted from the quarantine rule. The fifth test match is slated to be played from the 14th Of January. The Ashes trophy is currently with the Australian side after the 2 – 2 draw in the Ashes 2019.
