Allowed Babar to take his decisions: Rameez Raja

Pakistan has always posed a challenge to the oppositions, however, the system has been accustomed to controversies every now and then. Whether it is the involvement of few players in fixing or the sudden retirement from test cricket by the likes of Amir or the spontaneous resignation of the coaches like Waqar Younis and Misbah Ul Haq right before the T20 World cup, the word ‘stability’ was unknown to Pakistan’s think tank and management.

But recently, Pakistan’s performance graph has shown an upward trajectory. They won their maiden T20 World Cup clash against the arch-rivals India, and the team almost reach the finals. Some believe that Ramiz Raja is the catalyst that has allowed for the performance to unleash.

The former commentator and member of the Pakistan 1992 World Cup-winning team seem to have emphasized the need of bonding with the fans through digital channels. Pakistan Cricket youtube channel has been releasing plenty of content lately, reflecting a change in atmosphere and vibe inside the dressing room after his arrival.

Pakistan team may not have reached the finals but it’s true that they have exceeded the hopes of their nation this time. Speaking of independent decision-making, Ramiz Raja in a recently released video talked about how he allowed Babar Azam has his way regarding the team selection and that the captain must not fear losing the match against India in the WC.

Cricket is a sport where Captaincy is crucial. Leadership matters. So when a leader is given confidence and is given freedom for decisions, then he goes to own everything including team, performances, and even the disasters. He becomes more transparent and courageous. I allowed the same freedom to Babar Azam. I had a talk with Babar Azam and the team regarding this that do not worry about the results. Before India match, I told them to play fearlessly and good cricket and not worry about losing and that the nation will stand by your side if end losing by giving a fight.”

Pakistan has carried their confidence and momentum from their excellent World cup campaign and swept away the T20 and test series in Bangladesh by 3 – 0 and 2 – 0 respectively. Pakistan’s next assignment is the home series against West Indies. The 3 T20s will start from 13th of December followed by three ODIs from 18th December.
