Kohli removed as ODI captain, Rohit Sharma to lead ODI team in SA

A major development is coming up which says that Rohit Sharma will be captaining the Indian ODI Team in South Africa. There were speculations that the BCCI in its meeting will look to decide on the future of the Indian ODI captaincy. Now according to Vikrant Gupta, BCCI has decided that Rohit Sharma will be the ODI captain too.

Earlier, Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy of T20 before the World Cup in Dubai. The team got off to a disastrous start against Pakistan and ended their chances of reaching the semis when the Kiwis defeated them. One of the reasons why Kohli may have been removed as the ODI captain is that the BCCI think tank is looking to win an ICC tournament in the coming years, something which Kohli has not been able to achieve despite his great performances.

India last won an ICC tournament in 2013 under MS Dhoni. They lost to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, lost to NZ in the 2019 World cup semis, and were unable to make it into the semis of this year T20 World cup. There have been many reports regarding the captaincy of Virat Kohli this year. Earlier there were speculations that all is not well in the team and one of the senior players complained against Kohli for making him insecure.

There were also eyebrows when R. Ashwin, regarded as the best spinner in the world at the moment, was left out of the playing eleven in England where conditions were appearing favourable for the off-spinner. Then there was news of Kohli requesting the BCCI to remove Rohit Sharma as the vice-captain of the Indian team because of his age. It will be interesting to see how the team dynamics will turn out from now on.

Great record in IPL of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy

Rohit Sharma has been one of the best cricketing brains in India. The Mumbaikar has led his IPL franchise to a record five IPL titles, even surpassing Dhoni’s 4 IPL titles. Rohit has also captained India in crucial periods in the absence of Virat Kohli. India’s next ODI assignment is now in South Africa.
