Not only the BCCI but even the players wanted him onboard: Sourav Ganguly on Dravid

Rahul Dravid had enjoyed an illustrious career as a player. He continued to contribute to Indian Cricket after his retirement from the game. As the director of the NCA operations, Dravid heavily nurtured the Under 19 players, many of whom are part of bench strength and close to knocking the doors of the Indian Cricket team.

Once it was confirmed that Ravi Shastri would be leaving the head coach, there were speculations that Dravid would take the place as he was being considered as the natural successor of the position owing to his significant coaching experience with the young guys.

According to a report on a website, the interview with the BCCI head was done on the show ‘Backstage with Boria’.. Sourav Ganguly has now revealed that Dravid initially was not inclined to take up the coaching of Team India as that would mean not being able to spend a lot of time with his young children. India is probably the busiest cricketing nation in the world, who are on the road for a good 8 – 9 months in a year.

The head of BCCI said that at one point they had given up the possibility of having Dravid on board. Dravid started his 2-year tenure with the Indian team with the New Zealand T20 series. He is likely to be paid around 10 crores for his tenure which is one of the highest remuneration ever offered to an Indian coach.

Players have an inclination to be like Dravid: Ganguly

Dravid was re-appointed as the NCA head coach which signified no possibility of becoming the head coach of Team India but Ganguly said that during the personal calls he made to Dravid, he conveyed that not only the BCCI but even the players want him on board.

It is worth noting that Anil Kumble was appointed as the head coach before Ravi Shastri. But due to major rifts with Virat Kohli, the legendary bowler decided to step away.

Ganguly in his own words, “And when we spoke to the players also [about] what sort of person they want, you could clearly see that, you know, there was an inclination to Rahul so we communicated that to him. I spoke to him personally many times [saying] that, ‘I know it’s hard but give it a try for two years, and if you find it too hard then we’ll see another way’”

Ganguly lastly said that he didn’t know what changed Dravid’s mind but he agreed to be the head coach for two years. Under Ravi Shastri, Virat Kolhi led Indian side witnessed great success, winning 28 matches from 46 Test matches and continuing their undefeated streak since 2012 in Test series in home conditions. India last lost the home test series against England.

Dravid, known to have a calm temperament is being roped in primarily to help India win an ICC tournament. The team has achieved some significant feats in the last few years however, they have not been able to win an ICC event since 2013. India will host the 2023 World Cup however, their primary focus will be next year’s T20 world cup in Australia in October. After the NZ series, India’s next assignment will be the South Africa tour which will commence on the 26th of December. India will play 3 tests and 3 ODIs.
