NZ spinners are not as good as Indian Spinners: Simon Doull

After bowling NZ out for 62 runs in their 1st innings, India scored comfortably in the second innings, with Mayank Agarwal scoring a half-century. For India, everyone contributed including Cheteshwar Pujara with 47 runs from 97 balls with four fours and one six.

With the help of some late hitting by Axar Patel, India made 276 runs for seven wickets in 70 overs, after which captain Virat Kohli decided to declare the innings, giving New Zealand a herculean task of surviving nearly two and half days on this turning track. India has set a target of 540 runs.

Former cricketer Simon Doull while speaking to the host broadcaster said “In these conditions, NZ is not equipped well enough without Kane Williamson to bat for a really long time against quality bowling. So, there is a chance that it will finish today. I will like to think that New Zealand will hang in there.

New Zealand spinners arent’s as good as Indian spinners, in these conditions, or in any conditions. When you have pressure from only one end, it becomes a lot easier to bat. You look at the surface and you think, yeah India have done really really well. They put on a good total in the first innings, they have managed to declare their second innings and they are under great position.”

Earlier India decided to not enforce the follow on, and the probable reason for it was revealed by VVS Laxman

On being asked about India’s Team selection for SA Tour

Simon Doull admitted that the Indian coaching staff will have a difficult time choosing the players for the South African tour considering that a lot of non-regular test side players have given brilliant performances. Shreyas Iyer scored a century and a half-century in the 1st test match whereas Mayank Agarwal scored 150 and a half-century in the second innings on a difficult track. Doull also said that India will require a quality seam attack including all Bumrah, Sharma, Siraj. But when it comes to taking the spinners to the tour, this is what he said

When you get to Axar Patel, Ashwin, and Jadeja, can you take all three? When you look at these situations I guess with the Covid protocols, are you allowed to take extra players, and if they are, then the selection becomes quite easier and if they are not, then how many spinners do you need to take, how many seams bowlers do you need to take and what is the mix of the second keeper, who is going to play that role”

NewZealand came for their 2nd innings and quickly lost Tom Latham to Ravi Chandran Ashwin, in the form of LBW out to a straight one. The tea was taken early, as the match came to halt because of the technical fault of the spyder cam. NZ were 13 for 1 at the time of tea.
