To be in the great company of Jim Laker and Anil Kumble is very special indeed: Sir Richard Hadlee on Ajaz Patel’s 10 wickets

Sir Richard Hadlee, one of the best bowlers that the world has ever seen has now congratulated Ajaz Patel on taking 10 wickets in an innings becoming the only New Zealander to do it. Previously the Bowling figure for New Zealand was held by Richard Hadlee himself when he took 9 wickets for 52 runs against Australia at Gabba in the 1985 series.

Ajaz Patel joins the premier club of Jim Laker and Anil Kumble who has achieved this feat in international cricket.  Jim Laker did it against the Australians whereas Kumble achieved the feat against Pakistan in the 1999 Eden Garden Test Match at Kolkatta.

In his own words, “”Congratulations to Ajaz on a superb bowling performance. It was a delight to watch; a well deserved reward, and a great moment for him, New Zealand cricket, and world cricket. To be in the great company of Jim Laker and Anil Kumble is very special indeed. Good luck to him and the team in the second innings.”

The left arm spinner bowled his heart out, bowling 47.5 overs, which had 12 maidens and conceded only 119 runs at an economy of 2.48

While the day has been special for Ajaz Patel, Newzealand succumbed to 62 runs in reply to India’s 325 in the first innings. India at the end of the day has put on 69 runs and has amassed a lead of 332 runs on a track that has been assisting spin right from the beginning of the second day. A total of 16 wickets fell mostly to spinners. India resume their innings from 220 for four and Mayank Agarwal was the star batsman who scored 150 runs.

Earlier, Craig Mcmillan lavished praises on Ajaz Patel and said that the stars were aligned for him to create a history in the city from where his family shifted when he was 8 years old.
