During the IPL retention, Rajasthan Royals announced their retentions. They were Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rajasthan Royals had to let go of some of the big names like Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer and now Kumar Sangakkara, director of cricket of Rajasthan Royals has now given the reasons why the duo was not retained by the franchise.

Citing Ben Stokes as the best all-rounder he has seen in a very very long time, Sangakkara commented that the player is an absolute match-winner, a brilliant team man, and also has excellent leadership skills. He also brings ‘amazing energy to the field but considering the no. of retentions that were allowed, the team management had to consider players’ availability and had to look at a host of other dynamics such as player injuries, and various other aspects.

The same reasons were cited for letting go of Jofra Archer, who has given incredible performance ever since he joined the franchise in 2018. In the last three seasons, Archer has picked up 20, 11, and 15 wickets respectively at an economy of almost 7 runs per over.

Sanju Samson has been retained for Rs 14 crores, Buttler for Rs 10 crores, and Yashasvi  Jaiswal for Rs 4 crore. Earlier there were reports that Samson was likely to leave the franchise and go to CSK but the player from Chennai decided to stay with RR. Samson has amassed 484, 375, and 342 runs in the last three seasons of IPL at an impressive strike rate of nearly 140.

Earlier Daniel Vettori commented that players like Ben Stokes and K L Rahul may not be wanted to be retained by the franchise as the respective franchise has performed below par over the years. He further elaborated that players may want to explore the opportunity and go to a winning franchise.
