Ever since Virat Kohli has stepped down from the T20 captaincy, there have been rumors swirling that the ODI captaincy too will be taken away from him. And the player likely to succeed him will be the new T20 captain Rohit Sharma. There have been rumors in the cricketing fraternity that Kohli’s dominant behavior has taken a toll on the rest of the team and that Rohit Sharma has been a leader-like figure in the eyes of many players.
After the New Zealand tour, India’s next assignment will be South Africa where they will play all three formats. There are also concerns whether the tour will go on or not due to the emergence of the Omicron, a new variant of Coronavirus, which the WHO has classified as a “variant of concern”. As of writing this post, the tour is on, according to BCCI head Sourav Ganguly.
The Indian Team will depart to SA on either the 8th or 9th of December. One of the surprising movies that the fans can expect is the appointment of a new ODI Captain. While Kohli announced his T20 captain resignation on his own, it is widely believed that the BCCI Management had made up their mind to strip Kohli of his T20 captaincy.
A BCCI official has said that the ODI squad for the SA tour will be announced in a few days.
“The Indian squad will be announced in the next few days time. We will have everything ready from our end and then wait for the government’s nod. If the government tell us to abort the trip, then we would, but we need to keep the squad selected and ready,” a senior BCCI official told news agency PTI.
Why Kohli’s captaincy is likely to be taken off?
Kohli has a magnificent record as a captain but his inability to win the ICC tournaments has been a concern to the fans and BCCI. More importantly, his scores in the crucial stages of the game such as semi-finals and finals haven’t been impressive either. Rohit Sharma’s decision-making has been widely praised. The newly T20 Captain for India has also won 5 IPL titles for Mumbai Indians, the most by any team.
Can the tour SA tour be cancelled?
Witnessing the emergence of the Omicron Variant, the Indian Government has decided to stay the ban on International flights which earlier were going to be lifted from 15th December. The BCCI is in touch with the government and if the government does not give nod to the tour, then BCCI will have no choice but to abort the tour.
