David Warner comments ‘Chapter Closed’ after deciding to not continue with SRH

Australia’s David Warner last few months have been a roller coaster ride. The feud between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the player was widely publicized. The player was seen sitting out in the dugouts during most of the IPL 2021. Even the SRH’s assistant coach, Brad Haddin revealed on the podcast that the batsman was dropped from the side due to non-cricketing reasons.

Australia was far from favourites coming into the T20 World cup 2021. The left-hander did look in great touch but it wasn’t until the semi-final, that the batsman exhibited a batting display under pressure, putting the attack back on the Pakistani bowlers.

His innings in the final certainly helped Australia to chase the target. Critics were being silenced as the player came back into form during the crucial stages. Australia clinched their maiden T20 World cup and Warner, rightly so has the last laugh.

The left-hander had already hinted months ago that he was unlikely to be retained by the franchise. Whether the franchise negotiated with him or Warner simply refused to continue with them and fancies getting a higher bid in the auction, can never be known, however, the SRH co-owner expressed his opinion in the IPL retention program, that if the players don’t want to continue with the franchise and enter mega-auctions, they are free to do so, hinting that negotiations with David Warner and Rashid Khan did not come to fruition.

It was Warner that led SRH to their maiden IPL victory in 2016 when they defeated RCB by 8 runs in the final. The batsman is one of the most successful foreign batsmen in the IPL who has scored more than 5000 runs at an average of nearly 42 with staggering 50 half-centuries.

Rashid Khan and David Warner both will be eyeing a higher amount than what they would have received in the retention process and seeing their current red hot form, the new franchises based out of Lucknow and Ahmedabad would be eyeing them.

Warner now has put a post on Instagram thanking the fans and supporters of the team. He posted an image including himself, Rashid Khan, and Kane Williamson and wrote “Chapter Closed”. Upon being asked by a fan whether he would like to play for the franchise if they chose to retain him, the batsman replied “No, they won’t”
