Kohli to play under Maxwell Captaincy at RCB? Daniel Vettori Weighs in

As announced during the IPL retention program, RCB has gone with three retentions. Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammad Siraj. The surprising left out was Yajuvendra Chahal and Harshal Patel. Now Daniel Vettori, the former and RCB captain has weighed in whether Maxwell would be the next captain of RCB.

RCB was expected to go with four retentions. However, it is likely that they want to save their purse to get players in the mega-auction. Virat Kohli had already announced that he will step down from the RCB and Indian Team T20 captainship in order to manage the workload.

During the retention program 2022, the RCB’s Director of Cricket Operations, Mike Hesson elaborated that Virat may not be the captain but will always be the leader. Kohli is also the icon player of RCB and has been with the franchise ever since IPL was launched.

During a conversation with Cricinfo, Vettori commented that Maxwell has given some performances for the franchise recently and is the contender to take over the captaincy from Virat Kohli.

Players want to go to the bigger option: Daniel Vettori

The IPL retention has thrown some curveballs to the franchise owners. With the addition of the two new IPL teams based out of Lucknow and Ahmedabad, the demand for quality players has skyrocketed as the newly inducted team will be ready to shell out huge contracts to get the top players. Vettori believes ” that players want to be available to the new teams and that it is hard to criticize a franchise without knowing everything going in the background”

There are already reports that the Lucknow team has already made an offer to K L Rahul to be their captain for Rs 20 crores. If the reports come to be true then both the player and the franchise could face a fine as it was not permissible to offer deals to the players before the retention was finalized.

Would have picked Harshal Patel Over Siraj as third retainer: Daniel Vettori

Vettori elaborated the reason why he preferred Harshal Patel over Mohammad Siraj and that is the slower ball which he bowls, that can be relied upon under different conditions.
