The IPL retention show revealed some major names that were left out by their franchises. K L Rahul was one of them as the star batsman had been in terrific form recently and has also done well as a captain for the franchise. Now Punjab Kings coach Anil Kumble has revealed the reasons for not retaining K L Rahul.

Punjab surprisingly went with only two retentions, Mayank Agarwal for 14 crores and Arshdeep Singh, an uncapped player for 4 crores. It is the only team in the franchise that has gone with two retentions and the talking point on social media is why the franchise did not retain the likes of K L Rahul.

During the IPL retention show, Aakash Chopra raised a point that the likes of Anil Kumble in the team, Punjab have been unable to retain its core players. Earlier, R. Ashwin who was also the captain of Punjab left for Delhi Capitals and now K. L Rahul, the captain again has left. K L Rahul came into Punjab in 2018 and took over the captaincy in 2020.

Speaking to Jatin, Irfan Pathan, and Aakash Chopra on Star Sports, Anil Kumble revealed that the franchise tried to retain him, which is why they chose him as the captain two years ago. But he wanted to go into the auction and that is the player’s choice.

In his own words, “The major challenge for us was K L Rahul. We wanted to retain him. That’s one of the reasons we chose him as captain 2 years ago, so he could be the core of the team. But he decided to go into the auction, we respect that decision. It’s the players’ prerogative”

Now that K L Rahul has chosen to go into the auction, it would be interesting to see the bid that he will fetch as the batsman has done brilliantly for Team India recently. There are reports that a new franchise based from Lucknow is zeroing on K L Rahul to be the captain.

When is the IPL Mega Auction?

The date of the mega-auction has not been revealed yet, however it is likely to take place in January 2022, probably in the second or third week. All the players who were released will be into the bidding system and it’s likely that the teams would try to bring the maximum amount of their core players.
