The IPL retention show revealed some surprising names that were not retained by their franchises. There could be two reasons. Either the franchise did not want to retain some players or the players were unhappy with the money that the franchise was offering them to retain. David Warner and Rashid Khan were the two surprises that were released by the franchise.

The IPL retention announcement was done on 30th November 2021. While David Warner had already hinted before that he will not be retained by his IPL Franchise, the release of Rashid Khan came as a shock to everyone. SRH co-owner revealed the names of the players who they have retained while thanking the ones who would be going into the auction. The co-owner also said that if the players do not want to be with the team but want to go into the auction, then they are free to go.

David Warner spoke about the ill-treatment that he got from the franchise. According to warner, he was stripped of the captaincy and was made to sit in the dugout for no reason. Before coming into the T20 World Cup, Warner was out of form, however, his innings in the semi-final and final helped Australia to clinch their maiden T20 World Cup Title.

If Rashid Khan and David Warner go into the auction, they are likely to fetch a higher price than SRH would have been able to offer them for retention. As per BCCI rules, if the team decides to go with four retentions, then the first retention would receive 16 crores, the second one would get 12 crores, the third would get 8 crores and the fourth one would get 4 crores.
