The IPL retentions have ended and all the team has announced their retainers. The show was hosted by Irfan Pathan, Aakash Chopra, and Jatin on Star sports on 30th November 2021. While most of the retainer names were already confirmed before the official announcement, there were a few surprises.
When the CSK retainer announcement came, the names that were announced were expected by everyone. But what really surprised the fans was the retention choice of CSK Management. As per the rules, franchises would have to shell out differently if they decide to opt for only 1 retainer, 2 retainers, 3 retainers, and 4 retainers.
As per BCCI, if a franchise decides to retain four players, then they would have to pay 16 crores to the 1st Player, 12 crores to the second player, 8 crores for the third, and 6 cores for the fourth player.
Everyone expected Dhoni to be the first choice of CSK however the CSK management went in for Ravindra Jadeja as the first retention choice, meaning the left-hand all-rounder will be paid Rs 16 crores for three years. Dhoni will get Rs 8 crores for the same time period, however, it will be interesting to see for how many years he will play for the franchise. The former Indian cricketer is 40 years as of now and his batting prowess is not the same as before, however, his captaincy, leadership, and decision-making skills are still the best.
During the IPL retention show, Aakash Chopra even believed that Dhoni would have agreed to even be the fourth retention considering the years that are left in him for cricket. The franchise would have to spend less on him if Dhoni would have agreed to be the no. 4th retention.
Dhoni to retire after IPL 2022?
Now that the franchise has retained MSD, it is clear that he will play and captain the CSK side at least in 2022 IPL. The question then arises is that whether he will retire from IPL after the 2022 edition. Dhoni, last month made it clear that his last game will be at the Chepauk stadium
