It would not be wrong to say that R. Ashwin is in the best phase of his career. The off-spinner surpassed Harabhajan’s tally of wickets and became the 3rd highest taker for India in the test. Now, former captain, Daniel Vettori has backed the off-spinner to be India’s leading wicket-taker.
Vettori believes that the champion off-spinner would easily become the second-highest taker of wickets for India in Tests and may even surpass Anil Kumble’s tally of 619 Test wickets. Ashwin grabbed 3 wickets in each innings against New Zealand in the Kanpur Test. India came close to winning the match, courtesy of some great spin bowling but it ended in a draw.
It is worthwhile to note that Ashwin has surpassed Harbhajan’s tally of records with 23 tests fewer than him. Harbhajan played his last test match in 2015. “He (Ashwin) is far from done. He’s comfortably gonna end up as India’s second-highest wicket-taker and maybe he could make a run at Kumble as well,” Vettori in conversation with Espncricinfo.
Anil Kumble achieved 619 wickets in 132 matches. The former NZ captain believes that Ashwin has at least four years of cricket left in him and that he could dethrone Kumble as the leading India Test wicket-taker.
Surpised to see Jadeja being preferred over him: Vettori
Many cricketing pundits have raised their eyebrows with Ashwin sitting on the bench for the test matches in foreign conditions. Now, Vettori has voiced his opinion that a cricket who averages 5 wickets in a match gets left out off the team and Jadeja is preferred over him.
In his own words, “While all this he is one of the best spinners for India and in world cricket, he regularly gets dropped. It is fascinating to sit back and see a guy who averages over five wickets in a Test and is a consistent match-winner gets left out of the team, and how Jadeja gets preferred over him. But he keeps coming back,”
