The 2007 World cup was not only heartbreaking for the Indian team but also for the Pakistan team. Their defeat against Ireland sent a shockwave across the cricketing world. But more than the defeat, it was the death of their fatherly figure like coach Bob Woolmer the very next day.
There were many speculations about Woolmer’s death. But now, fifteen years later, the former prolific batsman and selector have made a startling claim about the late coach.
According to Inzamam, Woolmer used to enquire about Islam from Mushtaq Ahmed. Shahid Afridi revealed that the late coach was very curious about what Islam says about certain things. Inzamam disclosed all this with a TV show Zor ka Jor on SAMAA TV.
Inzamam further revealed that Woolmer was standing alongside him and Mushtaq Ahmed and enquired how can one become a Muslim. One has to perform Wuzu (Ablution), said Inzamam. Upon being asked what that it means, “So, Mushtaq started reciting it” said Inzamam.
When Mushtaq started reciting it, Woolmer asked him to recite slowly and said “I also want to repeat it.” Inzamam claims about Woolmer.
Afridi said that it was the first time he came across such news about Bob Woolmer and said Perhaps this did happen.
The former Pakistani cricketer further added that the coach then was wearing shorts and was not even paak, he don’t want to misquote, he had recited the Kalma, and now Allah knows better”. Afridi upon being asked if he thought Woolmer was the best coach Pakistan ever had, he replied “One of the best.”
