He was in charge of the team for more than four years and came in after Anil Kumble stepped away from the head coach after the fallout with Virat Kohli. While speaking to speaking to India Today, upon being asked of the greatest achievement under his tenure, Shastri termed winning in Australia as the biggest achievement under his coaching. Shastri lent his opinion that youngsters are needed in the team as they not only bring exuberance and fearlessness but also keep the experienced players on their toes. The balance is needed to make a very good cricket team. The former coach also believed that he conveyed his desire to have many fast bowlers in the team when he onboarded the team.

While Team India has managed to achieve great success over the years, the team has remained deprived of the ICC trophy. The last time India won an ICC tournament was the Champions Trophy in 2013. When asked for his opinion about what should India do in order to ensure more ICC trophies, the departing coach said that the scheduling needs to be better to keep the players fit and fresh for major events.
